I Can Do All Things

I love being a pastor, but I am not cut out for it. I also love being a husband and father, but I am not naturally good at it. Come to think of it, there is hardly ever a day in my life when the things I need to do come easily to me. Can you relate to what I am saying?

That is why we need Jesus. We need the power of His Holy Spirit at work in our lives.

There is a Bible verse we Christians like to quote, but I think we often doubt it, because we misunderstand it. The verse is Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

How often have we used this verse for self-motivation, only to fail miserably at what we attempt? The problem is that we focus on the words “all things,” when our greater focus should be on the words “through Christ.”

Philippians 4:13 does not teach that Jesus will give us the ability to do all the things WE want to do; it teaches that Jesus will empower us to do all the things HE calls us to do. Even then, it doesn’t mean life will come easily. It means He will give us the strength to meet the challenges that each day brings.

Do you need more strength? First make sure you have accepted Jesus as the Lord of your life. Then ask Him each day to fill you with His Spirit, and show you the things He wants you to do. You can do it all “through Christ.”
