Overview of the Book of Amos (see attached)

“What Does Amos’ Prophecy Teach US?”

- Answer = “Don’t be like Israel! Be a God-follower, a Christ-

follower.” What does this look like? What does it mean?

1. I receive God’s Word as Truth

- God spoke Heb.1:1, 2 cf. Matt.4:4 (Why? – to live)

- It is TRUE: Israel was exiled to Assyria in 722 B.C., as prophesied

POINT: Believe what God says _the BIBLE

2. I recognize the LORD

- His Person: “the Lord Almighty” 9:5; “Sovereign” (19X in Amos);

“Holy” 4:2 = pure, above us cf. 1 John 1:5, 6 –“God is light…”

- His Plea: “Seek me and live” 5:4, 6, 14

- His Patience: God gave Israel ample warning in the form of hunger,

drought, failed crops, and plagues yet Israel would NOT repent

4:6-11 cf. 2 Peter 3:9 –God is patient in giving time to repent.

3. I recognize that Sin WILL be Judged

- Rom.6:23 = choose to sin/choose to suffer

- 4:12, 13 = “Prepare to meet your God…reveals his thought to man.”

cf. Amos 5:18 = God told them…without excuse for sin.

- New Testament: Heb.9:27; 2 Cor.5:10 cf. Prov.24:12; Heb.10:26-31 =

connects O.T. with N.T. = God has NOT changed

POINT: God’s “wrath” is with JUST cause cf. John3:36

4. I respond to God’s Promise of Deliverance by Believing Him

- Life through Jesus John 5:24; 1 John5:11-13

- Rom.6:23, 8:1…Ask, “Am I “in Christ”?” -> Change / Holiness

- Amos 9:11-15 = Blessing to believing Israel and every believer in

Christ at His coming Phil.3:20, 21; 1 John 3:1-3; Titus 2:11-14

5. I am responsive DAILY to Following Jesus

= open to self-examination in view of God’s revealed standards…not

comparing ourselves to one another; seeing ourselves as God sees us

- 2 Peter 1:3-11 = growing steadily lest we, with all the privileges of a

believer, become callous and have false security regarding eternity

…Israel’s big problem = arrogance = not listening to God

POINT: the BIBLE and ME -> Obedience = be like Jesus
