Theme of Ephesians = Grow Up Spiritually

Chapter 1: reinforces to our MINDS the Blessings  

Chapter 2: reinforces to our MINDS our Beliefs      “In Christ”


A. A National Separation   vs.11, 12

   - speaking to Gentile believers, not to Jewish believers

   - Gentiles spoken of negatively by the Jews (attitude) because they have no SIGN (circumcision) of relationship with God

   - Jews have many privileges, yet still rebel against God   Rom.2:1-3:2 

   - reality of the Gentiles distance from God _descriptions get more

     serious   cf. 13- “far away” from God


B. A Spiritual Reconciliation    vs.13-18

   - vs.13 – Gentiles “brought near” to God

   - vs.13-16 – Jesus thru His death abolished the O.T. law

           _commands and regulations that stood between / caused

          “hostility” between Jews & Gentiles, man & God

   - Jesus’ perfect sacrifice paid man’s death penalty; His death

     on the cross satisfied God’s righteous demands   2 Cor.5:21

     cf. Hebrews 10:11-14; 1 John 4:10  

   ->BOTH Jews & Gentiles reconciled to God thru faith in

        Christ _peace with God _ access to God “in Christ” 18

POINT: Christ is our Peace 14, made Peace 15, preached Peace 17

God’s Purpose = to create “one new man” – the Body of Christ,

    the Church _a UNITY of Jews & Gentiles “in Christ”


C. Together “in Christ”   vs.19-22

   - Identity = God’s People, “household”, Body, Building 

                      cf. 3:6, 1 Peter 2:4-5, 9-10

   - “rising to become a holy Temple” = spiritual growth

   cf. Philippians 3:20 –“Our citizenship is in heaven.”
