When our son Luke was little, he went through a phase where he often spoke these two words to me: MOM SAID! He used these words when he wanted to convince me that Katie had given him permission to eat a particular snack or engage in a particular activity. If my answer for something was “No,” he would attempt to overrule my decision with the words, “Mom said!”
I wish I could say that our little boy was always telling the truth, but of course he wasn’t. Still, his words gave us insight into what he was thinking. He thought that by invoking his mother, he was appealing to a higher authority. He thought that the words “Mom said” would force Dad to back down and relent.
There are many different voices of authority in our lives: Mom said. Dad said. The teacher said. The boss said. The coach said. The judge said. But there is one voice that should always have the final authority in our lives, with these words: JESUS SAID.
Here are just a few of the famous things that Jesus said. I will include the references, so that you can look them up in the Bible and read the context in which they were spoken.
JESUS SAID: You must be born again (John 3:7). Do not be afraid (Matthew 14:27). Follow Me (John 1:43). Love one another (John 13:34). Go, and sin no more (John 8:11). Go and make disciples (Matthew 28:19).
May we never stop hearing and obeying the words that Jesus said.
