On a recent vacation, my wife and I spent some time cleaning the garage. Even though others were not there to see it, I was embarrassed by the things I have been storing. Some items have been sitting in boxes since we moved to our home 11 years ago. It was good to finally see them go.
Some things are foolish to store, because they just clutter and complicate our lives, but other things are good to store. For example, it is wise to have some money in the bank, some food in the pantry, and some clothes in the closet. (As long as it’s not too many clothes!)
There is something else we should be storing, and that is God’s Word. In Psalm 119:11 the psalmist wrote, “I have stored up Your Word in my heart, that I might not sin against You.”
I am concerned about the lack of Bible knowledge in our generation, even among professing Christians. Going without God’s Word each day is like going without money, food, and clothes; we may survive for a while, but we cannot live well.
The Bible tells us how to be saved from sin, by trusting Jesus as our Lord and Saviour. It helps us have victory over sin, by teaching us what God requires of us. The Bible is not a book of rules; it is a manual for healthy living.
If daily Bible reading has not been your practice, I encourage you to start storing up God’s Word today.
Learn it. Love it. Live it.
