At our church, I began 2026 with a series of sermons titled “Jesus Said.” Each message featured a famous statement that Jesus made, and had it not been for my wife, I would have missed a very important one.
After reading her Bible one day, Katie sent me a text that said, “Jesus certainly had a catchphrase, didn’t He?!” When I asked her, “Which one?” she was surprised that I didn’t know. She then directed my attention to Jesus words: “I tell you the truth.”
How could I have missed it? That phrase of Jesus is recorded over 70 times in the Gospels, but I hadn’t focused on it, because He would use the phrase to preface another important statement.
When Jesus said, “I tell you the truth,” it was like a parent or teacher saying “Listen up!” to get people’s attention. Whenever we encounter this phrase in the Bible, we would be wise to pay special attention to the words that follow.
Every day in this world, we are bombarded with lies. It’s hard to know who we can believe. With the advance of artificial intelligence, even pictures and videos can be fake. But thankfully, we can always trust Jesus.
Jesus speaks the truth, because HE IS the truth! In John 14:6, Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” I encourage you to trust Jesus as your Saviour, and trust every word He says. He will never lie to you.
